Another Astros key player is facing significant challenges since returning from a neck injury late last month, raising doubts about his place in the Houston Astros’ playoff rotation.
In his most recent outing, he gave up six runs on eight hits over just 4.2 innings, continuing a trend of underwhelming performances since his August 21 comeback. After the game, Verlander acknowledged that he may have rushed back too soon, which has contributed to his difficulties.
“I think I came back from the neck injury a little fast,” he said, according to Kristie Rieken of the Associated Press. “I know the schedule, I want to help the team, but I need to pitch effectively. Clearly, the results haven’t been good, and all I can do is keep trying.”
Since returning, Verlander has recorded an 8.89 ERA over six starts, which would be unacceptable in the postseason, especially given the strong performance of the rest of the Houston pitching staff. This has led to speculation about him potentially moving to a bullpen role or even being left off the playoff roster.
With only 16 starts this season, it’s becoming evident that age may be catching up with the 41-year-old.
