The Chicago Cubs will be without a key member of their bullpen for the rest of the season. On Thursday, it was announced that the top reliever will undergo knee surgery on Friday, sidelining him for the remainder of 2024. Merryweather joined the Cubs in early 2023 after being claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and was an important part of the relief staff.
In 2023, the 32-year-old pitched in 69 games, logging 72 innings with a 3.38 earned run average and an impressive 32.3% strikeout rate. Although he struggled with walks, he stepped into a high-leverage role, achieving career highs with two saves and 17 holds.
However, injuries have plagued Merryweather this season, limiting his appearances. He participated in only 15 games after spending three months on the injured list with a right shoulder strain. This year, he recorded 15 innings with a 6.60 ERA and a blown save before going back on the injured list due to right knee tendinitis, leading to the upcoming surgery.
Despite facing some bullpen injuries this year and the likelihood of missing the postseason for a fourth consecutive season, the Cubs’ relief corps has performed well, currently boasting the sixth-best ERA in the National League and 12th overall in MLB.
Merryweather is under contract until after the 2026 season and is entering his second year of arbitration with the team. He aims to be ready for spring training to compete for a roster spot.
Next season will be crucial for President of Baseball Operations Jedd Hoyer, who has stated that improving the team for 2025 is a top priority. If Merryweather can return to his 2023 form, it would significantly support Hoyer’s ambitious plans.
