Latest; Rangers’ Chris Young drops ‘World Series’ take after contract extension

Following his pivotal role in leading the Texas Rangers to an unexpected World Series win in 2023, general manager Chris Young received a contract extension. He was also promoted from executive vice president and GM to president of baseball operations.

Regarding his recent extension and promotion, Young reiterated his commitment: “I mentioned this when I was hired—nothing would mean more to me than winning a World Series here, and I feel the same way about the next one,” he said, according to DLLS Rangers’ Abby Jones on X.

The Rangers stunned the baseball world by clinching their first-ever World Series title last season, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1. The Diamondbacks also surprised many by reaching the Fall Classic after a five-year playoff drought and a losing record in the three seasons prior to 2023.

The Rangers’ unlikely triumph followed six consecutive losing seasons from 2017 to 2022. Young joined the team as general manager during the COVID-shortened 2020 season and played a key role in building the roster that secured the championship in 2023.

Unfortunately, the team’s aspirations for the “next World Series” will likely have to wait another year, as the Rangers have faced challenges this season. They are currently 10 games behind the first-place Houston Astros in the American League West and eight games out in the AL Wild Card race, with six teams standing between them and the final postseason spot.
