Houston Astros outfielder will be added to the injured list due to a knee injury he sustained while hitting the wall during a catch in Anaheim on Saturday, according to manager Joe Espada on Monday night.
Gamel left Saturday’s game two innings after the incident and was absent from the Astros’ following two games. The team reported that Gamel has a “left knee contusion.”
Espada mentioned before Monday’s series opener in San Diego that Gamel wasn’t recovering as quickly as hoped and was still quite sore. Following the Astros’ 3-1 defeat, Espada confirmed that Gamel will be placed on the IL.
As of Monday night, Houston has not announced a corresponding roster move.
Jason Heyward made his second consecutive start in left field on Monday. With Gamel sidelined, Heyward may start against right-handed pitchers on days when either Kyle Tucker or Yordan Alvarez is the designated hitter.
