Justin Jefferson, a former junior college transfer, was penalized for targeting during Alabama’s 42-16 win over South Florida last week at Saban Field in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Tide fans felt the call was unjust, believing Jefferson made the hit with his shoulder rather than the crown of his helmet on Bulls’ quarterback Byrum Brown. Despite the dissent, the officials disagreed, and Jefferson was assessed a targeting penalty. As per NCAA rules, this means he will be sidelined for the first half of Alabama’s upcoming game against the Badgers.

Justin Jefferson, a former junior college transfer, was penalized for targeting in Alabama’s 42-16 win over South Florida last week at Saban Field in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Tide fans contested the call, arguing that Jefferson made the hit with his shoulder rather than the crown of his helmet on Bulls’ quarterback Byrum Brown. Despite the disagreement, the officials upheld the targeting penalty, and as per NCAA rules, Jefferson will be sidelined for the first half of the upcoming game against the Badgers.

Kalen DeBoer confirmed Jefferson’s suspension for the first half during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference.

“I think every situation is unique,” DeBoer said.

“For many of these players, it’s unfortunate because they’re not intentionally trying to harm anyone. I know Justin didn’t intend to hurt anyone. However, the criteria were met for targeting according to the rules. As an advocate for football, we need to prioritize safety. The game has seen enough incidents over time to warrant these rules, though they’re always under review and may be adjusted to better address different scenarios, as each case doesn’t fit a single mold.”
