Good News: We need him! Houston Astros ‘bank’ on injured $86 million star

After a troubling start to the season, the Houston Astros have managed to get back on track and are now set for their eighth consecutive playoff appearance.

However, one key player from their World Series victories has struggled. Justin Verlander, who rejoined the Astros on a two-year, $86.6 million contract after his stint with the New York Mets, has faced significant injury issues this season. With an ERA of 5.30, his worst since his rookie year, he risks missing out on the playoff roster.

Despite this, Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz remains confident that the three-time Cy Young Award winner will bounce back in time for October.

“I think the Astros are still one of the top teams,” Smoltz remarked. “His injuries have impacted his performance this year, but I believe he’ll sort it out. I’d bet on him getting it together.”

Verlander has been a crucial part of the Astros’ postseason success, with 10 wins in 21 starts across five playoff runs. Yet, the 41-year-old started the season on the injured list and has dealt with recurring neck issues, leading to one of his worst performances ever, where he gave up eight runs and eight hits to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Nevertheless, Verlander continues to receive support beyond Smoltz. Astros manager Joe Espada expressed optimism following Verlander’s recent struggles.

“I wouldn’t bet against someone with his track record and the level he’s maintained for so long,” Espada said. “I know he’ll go back, work hard, and resolve his issues. We need him.”
