Boise State coach has secured a contract extension through 2027, as announced today by Athletic Director Jeramiah Dickey.
“I’m thrilled to renew this contract. Boise State is where I want to be,” Shields said. “I’m eager about the future of this program. Over the past two years, we’ve shown significant improvement, and we’re committed to building on that success and striving to become a national championship contender.”
Shields, now entering his third season, has led the Broncos to notable achievements since his return to his alma mater in the spring of 2022. Under his leadership, Boise State has clinched the 2024 Mountain West regular-season title, won back-to-back Mountain West Tournament championships, and made two NCAA Championship appearances. The team has amassed a 41-19 overall record, including two seasons with over 20 wins each.
In his debut season, the Broncos finished 21-8 overall and 3-3 in Mountain West play, securing a tie for third place. They won the Mountain West Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where they were defeated by No. 15 Arizona in the first round.
In his second season, Boise State achieved a 20-11 record and a 5-1 mark in Mountain West play, tying for the regular-season title. The Broncos repeated as Mountain West tournament champions and made their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, falling to ninth-ranked Arizona once again.
Shields also coached Sam Sippel to the NCAA National Singles Championship tournament, making Sippel the first Bronco to reach that level since 2014.
During Shields’ tenure, the team has earned four All-Mountain West singles honors and received All-Mountain West recognition in doubles for two tandems. Additionally, the Broncos have garnered seven ITA Scholar-Athlete awards, 11 Academic All-Mountain West Team honors, and five Mountain West Scholar-Athlete accolades for maintaining a 3.5 or better cumulative GPA.
The Broncos will be in action this weekend at the annual Dar Walters Classic, hosted at the Appleton Tennis Center on campus.
