The Philadelphia Phillies have experienced a turnaround in their recent games, winning six straight before a loss to the Miami Marlins on Saturday.
This winning streak was crucial after a rough patch following the All-Star break, which threatened their NL East lead and allowed other National League teams to close in on the best record.
Despite this positive momentum, the Phillies are facing significant injury issues. They recently placed Austin Hays and Alec Bohm on the injured list, and J.T. Realmuto is expected to miss a few days after fouling a ball off his knee.
Additionally, the team announced they are putting Edmundo Sosa on the 10-day injured list due to back spasms, retroactive to September 7, meaning he won’t be eligible to return until September 17.
In response, the Phillies are promoting top pitching prospect Seth Johnson. This move, anticipated for a few days, addresses their search for a fifth starter in the rotation.
Johnson, acquired in the trade that sent Gregory Soto to the Baltimore Orioles earlier this year, has impressed since returning from Tommy John surgery. He boasts a 0.56 ERA over three starts with Philadelphia’s Triple-A affiliate.
The hope is that Johnson will perform well enough to secure a spot in the rotation for the rest of the season, providing reliable innings and helping the team pursue the top record in the National League.
