Huge Boost: Detroit Red Wings In another Blockbuster Deal That amazed Fans

The Detroit Red Wings have long been on the lookout for a starting goalie, and one trade proposal could potentially address this need.

According to the PuckGM tool on PuckPedia, which allows users to create their own trade scenarios, a suggested trade has the Red Wings acquiring Spencer Knight from the Florida Panthers.

In this proposed trade:

Red Wings receive:
– Spencer Knight

Panthers receive:
– Carter Gylander
– A third-round pick in 2026
– A third-round pick in 2027

This trade is intriguing as it would bring Knight, one of the top goalie prospects in the NHL, to Detroit in exchange for a prospect and two draft picks. Although Knight is highly regarded, his path to a starting role in Florida is blocked by Sergei Bobrovsky.

Knight was drafted 13th overall by the Panthers in the 2019 NHL Draft. He is currently in the second year of a three-year, $13.5 million contract and will become a restricted free agent when it expires. This move could provide Detroit with a potential future starter. Knight has played 57 NHL games, with a record of 49-32-17, a 2.91 GAA, and a .906 SV%.

In return, Florida would gain two third-round draft picks and goalie prospect Gylander. Gylander, drafted 7th overall in 2019, played for Colgate University last season with a 14-14-4 record, a 2.93 GAA, and a .901 SV%.

Knight has faced challenges recently, including time spent in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program during the 2022-23 season to manage obsessive-compulsive disorder. Although he spent the entire 2023-24 season in the AHL, he did join the Panthers during their Stanley Cup run. In a September 2023 interview with The Hockey News, Knight expressed optimism about returning to his previous form and becoming a top NHL goalie.

As Detroit enters the 2024-25 season, they lack a definitive No. 1 goalie, a situation they aim to address. The Red Wings have signed Cam Talbot to a two-year, $5 million contract to compete with Ville Husso and Alex Lyon for the starting role, and Jack Campbell has been signed as a backup. General Manager Steve Yzerman has indicated a preference not to carry three goalies, a situation that arose last season due to injuries.

Detroit will begin their 2024-25 season at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 10.
