The Detroit Red Wings are approaching the final stages of their rebuild, and there’s a proposed trade that could bring them a star forward. According to the PuckGM tool on PuckPedia, a user suggested a trade in which the Red Wings would acquire Nikolaj Ehlers from the Winnipeg Jets.
Red Wings acquire:
Nikolaj Ehlers ($3 million retained)
Jets acquire:
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard
Elmer Soderblom
The proposed trade would be significant, with the Detroit Red Wings acquiring Nikolaj Ehlers, a forward capable of playing in their top-six. In return, the Winnipeg Jets would receive two prospects to aid in their rebuilding efforts.
Ehlers, who is entering the final year of his seven-year, $42 million contract, could become a prime trade target if the Jets fall out of playoff contention. At 28, Ehlers could serve as a valuable middle-six forward for Detroit and provide additional depth if Lucas Raymond remains unsigned.
Last season, Ehlers tallied 25 goals and 36 assists, totaling 61 points over 82 games with Winnipeg. Throughout his NHL career, he has played 605 games, scoring 201 goals and adding 256 assists for 457 points.
In exchange, Winnipeg would receive Brandsegg-Nygard, chosen 15th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft. The forward had a strong season in Europe last year, notching 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points.
Additionally, the Jets would get Soderblom, a sixth-round pick from the 2019 NHL Draft who has since made it to the NHL. Soderblom played 21 games in the 2022-23 season, scoring 5 goals and 3 assists for 8 points. With Winnipeg, he could potentially become a full-time NHL player.
Ehlers on Trade Block
Nikolaj Ehlers has been the subject of trade speculation throughout the offseason. Entering the final year of his contract, the skilled forward could fetch a substantial return if the Winnipeg Jets decide to trade him.
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period ranked Ehlers third on his summer trade watch list and reported that Ehlers would be open to a move away from Winnipeg.
Pagnotta noted on June 5 that Ehlers, a 28-year-old Dane, is set to earn $6.75 million in actual salary for the 2024-25 season, with a cap hit of $6 million. He has a 10-team no-trade list, but while he hasn’t formally requested a trade, he would be receptive to one. Pagnotta also revealed that Ehlers is not interested in signing an extension with Winnipeg, which is why GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is actively exploring trade possibilities.
Ehlers has spent his entire NHL career with the Jets since being drafted ninth overall in 2014.
