The San Diego Padres are currently among the league’s top teams, but they appear poised to see significant roster turnover in free agency. Dylan Cease has already joined the Toronto Blue Jays, and additional departures could follow before the offseason concludes.
With much of their payroll committed to star players, the Padres have limited flexibility to pursue marquee free agents. Still, they may look to reshape the roster through one or two trades in the weeks ahead.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter reveal the Padres trade for St. Louis Cardinals veteran infielder.

“The Padres signed KBO star Sung Mun Song to a four-year, $15 million deal, but expecting him to immediately step into an everyday role is unlikely,” Reuter wrote. “Instead, expect him to start out in a super-utility role, similar to Ha-Seong Kim when he first joined the Padres. That leaves either first base or second base as an area of need, depending on where Jake Cronenworth plays, and more versatility would be welcome from anyone they acquire.”

Donovan would be the perfect addition for the Padres because he’s so versatile on defense.
Donovan would be able to play first base, second base, or third base across the infield for the Padres if needed. He could also play both corner outfield spots. His bat is good enough to slot in as the designated hitter, too.
San Diego needs more talent like Donovan, but the trade would be quite costly. Still, the Padres have never seemed to shy away from trading prospects for talent.
