The Arizona Diamondbacks battled a wide range of injuries throughout last season, yet still managed to come up just short of a playoff berth. That resilience highlighted both the depth of talent on the roster and manager Torey Lovullo’s ability to keep the team focused and motivated all year.
As the offseason begins, however, Arizona faces significant challenges across the roster to prevent a repeat of those issues. With aspirations of winning a World Series using their current core, the front office will need to make smart, innovative decisions to push the team to the next level.
The main priority of the Diamondbacks this winter is adding to the starting rotation, specifically for depth purposes. Arizona should be getting ace Corbin Burnes back from injury at some point this season, but coming off Tommy John surgery, the Diamondbacks can’t fully bank on his return.
The team is also likely to lose pitcher Zac Gallen in free agency, further hurting the depth in the starting rotation. But Arizona does have the tools needed to add pitching talent this offseason, and it could see the front office look to spend a little money.
The Diamondbacks aren’t likely to break the bank for any free agent this offseason, but we have seen this franchise add talent in recent years. This could happen again, and the Diamondbacks desperately need the front office to address these problems across the roster.
If the team were to do this, they could easily slide right back into the playoff mix for the 2026 season, giving them a strong chance to clinch. But everything will depend on how the front office acts, and right now, the route that they will take remains very much up in the air.
Arizona Diamondbacks Land Ranger Suarez
As the Diamondbacks try to build out the starting rotation for next season, adding a veteran arm to the mix could help everything. One option for the team could be left-hander Ranger Suarez, who is now a free agent after years spent with the Philadelphia Phillies.
This past year, Suarez posted a solid 3.20 ERA in 26 starts for the Phillies, showing that he could handle himself when called upon. Overall, Suarez has been excellent for Philadelphia over the years, and multiple teams have shown interest in signing him.
The veteran has put up a combined ERA of 3.59 in 104 starts for the Phillies, and he could shore up some of the concerns within the Diamondbacks’ starting rotation. Even with some concerns around the decline of his fastball, Suarez has found different ways to be successful on the mound.
Adding the left-hander to the mix could give this team much more length in the rotation, and the team could then ease Burnes back. Suarez isn’t an ace-level arm, but he could easily be a No. 2 or No. 3 type of guy for the pitching staff.
This move would be about winning right now, which is something that Arizona has to look to do with the core in place. Suarez won’t solve all the problems for the Diamondbacks, but he could give them a reliable arm who won’t completely break the bank this winter.
