The Houston Astros are facing a tough decision this winter. In recent years, they’ve seen 21st-century legends like Carlos Correa and George Springer depart. This offseason, third baseman could be the next to leave in free agency. He is expected to secure a contract worth over $100 million, with Spotrac estimating a four-year, $119 million deal. However, negotiations could be unpredictable, especially with Scott Boras as his agent. Recently, FanSided’s Nick Villano forecasted the destinations for the top 20 free agents this winter, predicting that Bregman will sign with the Detroit Tigers rather than returning to the Astros.
“They (The Tigers) ended up winning enough games to make the playoffs, and they even made it to Game 5 of the ALDS after sweeping the Astros in the Wild Card round,” Villano wrote. “Bregman picking the Tigers is him betting on the youth of this team to be the next version of the Astros. He could be the star as the rest of the team develops further.”
For the Tigers to realistically sign Bregman, they would likely need to offer a significantly higher bid than the Astros and the other teams interested. Bregman is probably inclined to give the Astros some form of a hometown discount. However, if Houston becomes distracted by pursuing other free agents, they could lose him. Still, if the Astros are determined to keep him, it will be tough for the Tigers to steal him away.
