The New York Mets are focusing on adding superstars during free agency this offseason, with strong ties to standout outfielder Juan Soto and top pitchers Blake Snell and Corbin Burnes. However, one player they are particularly linked to is a long-time fan favorite. The 29-year-old played the first six years of his MLB career with the Mets before becoming a free agent this winter. Over his tenure in New York, he hit 226 home runs in 846 games. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand believes there’s a good chance Alonso could return to the Mets this winter, suggesting his time with the team may not be over.
“Alonso is the biggest name of the Mets’ free agents, and while there has been plenty of chatter about New York making a push for Soto, a reunion with Alonso is definitely in play,” Feinsand wrote. “Alonso has been the face of the franchise for several years, and his big October moments didn’t hurt his cause, either.”
A potential reunion between Pete Alonso and the Mets has been a major storyline in recent months, with the team’s fan base strongly advocating for it. However, as is often the case, financial considerations will play a big role in the decision. If the Mets sign superstar Juan Soto, it could make it difficult to find the funds to bring back Alonso. Spotrac estimates that Alonso could secure a contract worth $174 million. Much of this depends on the other moves Mets owner Steve Cohen and the team make, but it’s clear that re-signing the beloved first baseman is one of their top priorities.
