The Cleveland Guardians don’t have many urgent roster needs heading into the offseason, as most of their lineup is under contract for 2025. However, there are a few vacancies in the starting rotation with Shane Bieber, Carlos Carrasco, and Alex Cobb set to become free agents.
Reports indicate that the team is already focused on strengthening its pitching staff and has added a veteran reliever on a minor-league deal.
According to Guardians Prospective on X, the team has signed 29-year-old left-handed pitcher to a minor-league contract for 2025, which includes an invitation to Spring Training.
He spent his entire seven-year MLB career with the Houston Astros organization, posting a 5.45 career ERA over 33 innings.
Although his major-league experience is limited, Mushinski has shown promise at the Triple-A level, recording a solid 3.68 ERA over parts of four seasons in the Pacific Coast League.
While Cleveland already boasts one of the best bullpens in baseball, the group is somewhat right-handed heavy, so adding a potential left-handed specialist like Mushinski could help strengthen the unit further.
Though the Guardians weren’t specifically in need of bullpen assistance, it’s a smart move to take a low-cost chance on a potential high-upside reliever.
The primary focus for the team this offseason remains the starting rotation, along with the possibility of acquiring at least one impactful bat, so it will be interesting to see how the front office proceeds from here.
