The Buffalo Bills have officially placed 29-year-old on injured reserve, the team confirmed on Tuesday.
He is dealing with a wrist injury that necessitates surgery.
This season, he has appeared in seven games, recording 12 tackles, three tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble across various positions on the defensive line.
Head coach Sean McDermott expressed optimism on Monday that Smoot could make a return later this season.
Under the terms of injured reserve, Smoot will be required to miss at least four games before he is eligible to rejoin the active roster.
