The New York Mets’ 2024 season ended with a 10-5 defeat in Game 6 of the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, marking the close of one of the most tumultuous seasons in the franchise’s history. Now, the team shifts its focus to the offseason, where they face a significant decision regarding star first baseman Pete Alonso and his impending free agency.

Since making his debut in 2019, Alonso has established himself as one of the premier power hitters in baseball. Although his 2024 performance dipped slightly (.240 BA, 34 HR, 88 RBI, .789 OPS), he continues to be a crucial part of New York’s lineup. As free agency approaches, Alonso acknowledged that he hasn’t focused heavily on it, but he expressed his strong feelings about the Mets and the city of New York.

“I haven’t really thought of anything that far. I love this team, I love this organization. This fanbase has treated not just myself, but my family, so, so well. Right now I’m just thinking of the group. Obviously, we’ll see what happens, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there, but I love New York, I love this team, I love playing in Queens.” – Pete Alonso, SNY

Mets, Pete Alonso facing major free agency decision

While the Mets still have a chance to retain Alonso, they ideally would have signed him to a long-term extension by now. With free agency approaching, the competition for him is expected to be fierce, as he will likely be one of the most coveted players in the league in the coming months.

Given the success New York experienced this season, they will likely do everything possible to keep the team together, which includes keeping Alonso. He clearly enjoys playing for the Mets, but his decision to re-sign will probably hinge on financial considerations. As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on both sides to see if they can reach an agreement.
