After missing two weeks because of an oblique injury sustained in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis QB Anthony Richardson is ready to return this Sunday as the Colts face the Miami Dolphins.
During a press conference on Friday, head coach Shane Steichen noted that Richardson “was throwing crisp passes” and “looked really good” throughout practice, according to ESPN’s Stephen Holder.
Despite missing the last two games and part of the victory against the Steelers, veteran Joe Flacco has performed well for the Colts. In three games this season, Flacco has completed 71 of 108 passes for 716 yards, with seven touchdowns and just one interception, earning a top-five QBR of 71.9. Even in the Colts’ only loss to the Jaguars with Flacco starting, he threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns.
However, the Colts are set to return to their starter, Richardson, on Sunday. He aims to improve his performance, having passed for 654 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions this season, with a QBR of 51.6. While his passing stats haven’t been stellar, Richardson adds a dual-threat capability to the offense, recording 141 rushing yards and a touchdown in limited play this season.
Although Richardson’s completion percentage has been between 50 and 60 percent in his first two seasons, he has demonstrated his ability to make impressive throws, including a 60-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Alec Pierce in Week 1 against the Houston Texans.
With running back Jonathan Taylor sidelined due to an ankle injury, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com and Steichen, it will be interesting to see how the Colts utilize Richardson, especially in the running game as he returns to action.
