BREAKING: San Francisco 49ers confirm the signing of Matthew Wright replacement to practice squad ahead of Chiefs clash

The San Francisco 49ers  sign former Packers kicker  to their practice squad, providing a potential replacement for Matthew Wright, whose status for Sunday’s game against the Chiefs is uncertain due to a shoulder injury, according to a source. Wright was signed on October 8, just two days after Jake Moody suffered a high ankle sprain that is expected to keep him out for at least two more games.

The 26-year-old,  a sixth-round pick in 2023, was waived by Green Bay in August after completing 27 of 33 field goals and 34 of 39 extra points as a rookie. He ranked 24th among 33 kickers in field-goal percentage (81.8%) and 25th among 25 in extra-point percentage (87.2%).  Anders Carlson last kick as a rookie was particularly notable, as he missed a crucial 41-yard attempt in the Packers’ 24-21 playoff loss to the 49ers, allowing San Francisco to mount a game-winning touchdown drive.

In his debut with the 49ers, Wright went 3-for-3 on field goals during a 36-24 victory at Seattle, successfully making kicks from 25, 41, and 35 yards. However, he suffered a shoulder subluxation while tackling on a kickoff return with 1:39 left in the game. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has indicated that this injury might keep him from playing against Kansas City, and Wright was not seen at practice on Monday.

Wright struggled with kickoffs in the game, managing only one touchback while the Seahawks had seven returns, including a 97-yard runback for a touchdown. Shanahan mentioned on Friday that the 49ers aim for their kickoffs to consistently result in touchbacks. Additionally, rookie Ricky Pearsall inspired his teammates during his first practice since the shooting incident.

San Francisco 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall returned to the practice field on Monday, bringing a boost to the team. Meanwhile, linebacker Dre Greenlaw and cornerback Charvarius Ward were fined by the NFL for their involvement in a sideline skirmish during the game against the Cardinals. Greenlaw was inactive for that game.

“Our plan is never to be short,” Shanahan said.
