It’s evident that the Boston Red Sox plan to enhance their starting rotation this winter.
Boston needs at least one more starter, ideally a left-handed pitcher, and they’re willing to invest this offseason. With potential for a strong 2025 season, strengthening their pitching staff will be beneficial.
While signing a top free agent like Corbin Burnes would be appealing, it’s not essential for Boston right now. They are building a promising team with a solid rotation that includes Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, and Lucas Giolito. Giolito, who signed last year, has an option for 2025 and is expected to return.
Adding a lefty is crucial, as Boston currently lacks one in their lineup. One player they should consider is Yusei Kikuchi from the Houston Astros. After a three-year, $36 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, Kikuchi was traded to Houston and will be a free agent at the end of the season.

In 2024, Kikuchi posted a 4.05 ERA over 32 starts, but he excelled with a 2.70 ERA in 10 starts after joining Houston. He has the potential to be an All-Star and would provide a cost-effective left-handed option for the Red Sox. This signing would allow Boston to allocate funds toward improving their offense and bullpen as well.
