San Diego Padres pitcher exited Game 2 of the Wild Card series against the Atlanta Braves in the fourth inning due to elbow discomfort. Subsequent evaluations revealed UCL damage, requiring Tommy John surgery, which will sideline him not only for the remainder of the Wild Card series but also throughout 2025.
Musgrove has faced injury setbacks in the past two seasons but has performed well when healthy. This year, he recorded a 3.88 ERA and 3.96 FIP over 19 starts, totaling 99.2 innings, ranking fourth on the team behind Dylan Cease, Michael King, and Matt Waldron. He was expected to be part of the Padres’ playoff rotation, but now San Diego must explore alternative options.
For the NLDS, Cease and Yu Darvish are set to pitch in Games One and Two, with the Game Three starter likely being Michael King. For Game Four, they will choose among Waldron, Randy Vasquez, and trade acquisition Martin Perez.
As a side note, Musgrove was a supplemental first-round pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011 and was involved in a complex trade to the Houston Astros in 2012, which included players like Francisco Cordero and J.A. Happ. He later moved to the Pirates in the deal for Gerrit Cole and eventually joined the Padres in a three-team trade that notably sent David Bednar to Pittsburgh after his breakout 2020 season.
