The Philadelphia Phillies head into Tuesday’s game with a 93-64 record, just half a game behind the Major League leaders.
In recent seasons, the team has faced little challenge, gearing up for their third postseason appearance and aiming for their first National League East title in 11 years in 2024.
As the Phillies were competing on Monday night, Charlie Blackmon, one of their longtime rivals, announced that 2024 will be his final season in Major League Baseball.
At 38, Blackmon has been a consistent challenge for Philadelphia, boasting a career batting line of .295/.368/.528 against them, along with 29 extra-base hits, 32 RBI, and a 115 OPS+ over 288 plate appearances in 71 games.
His career OPS of .896 against the Phillies ranks second among teams where he has had over 200 plate appearances.
Blackmon is among the few players who have spent their entire career with a single team, having played 14 seasons with the Colorado Rockies.
Entering Tuesday, he has a career line of .292/.352/.479, with 626 extra-base hits, 797 RBI, and a 111 OPS+. He also holds the record for the most triples in MLB since his debut in 2011 with 67.
While he may not reach Hall of Fame status—partly due to the “Coors Field Effect”—he has been a cherished figure in MLB and will be missed by many. However, his success against the Phillies might not be as mourned.
