The Houston Astros have faced another injury setback just a week before the MLB playoffs. Slugger injured his leg during Sunday’s series finale against the Los Angeles Angels at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
After an MRI on Monday, he was diagnosed with a sprained knee. Astros manager Joe Espada informed reporters that the three-time All-Star will miss at least the next two games due to the injury.
It’s a significant relief for the Astros that Yordan Alvarez’s injury isn’t more serious, but the timing is tough with the team in a crucial three-game series against division rival Seattle Mariners.
Houston needs just one win against Seattle to secure the AL West title, but they dropped Monday’s series opener without Alvarez. Espada noted that Alvarez could potentially return for the final series against the Cleveland Guardians, which is promising for his chances of being ready for the postseason.
Still, Astros fans remember how long it took Kyle Tucker to recover from what was initially called a shin contusion.
Tucker was sidelined for nearly three months recovering from what many initially thought was a minor injury. With the Astros so close to clinching a playoff spot, fans are undoubtedly hoping Alvarez doesn’t face a similar situation.
In 157 regular season games, Alvarez has been a key contributor, leading the Astros in home runs (35), RBIs (86), walks (69), doubles (34), and batting average (.308).
