Injuries continue to pile up for the team as another key player left Sunday’s game with a knee contusion. Yordan left Sunday’s 9-8 loss to the Angels due to a right knee contusion. After the game, manager Joe Espada told reporters, including The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, that Alvarez is “pretty sore” and will undergo testing.
The injury occurred when he slid into second base during a third-inning double and hit his knee on the ground, prompting the Astros to send in pinch-runner Mauricio Dubon.
Alvarez has dealt with knee issues throughout his career, having undergone arthroscopic surgeries on both knees in 2020. The Astros have primarily used him as a designated hitter due to these concerns. While there’s no indication that this injury is serious, it’s concerning for Houston’s star hitter just a week before the playoffs. Alvarez is having an impressive season, boasting 35 home runs and a .305/.309/.564 slash line in a career-high 636 plate appearances before Sunday’s game.
