The Astros have announced that right-hander will be placed on the 15-day injured list due to a thoracic spine strain, with the move retroactive to September 18. In his place, Seth Martinez has been called up from Triple-A.
He who was signed to a minor league deal last winter, has proven to be a valuable addition for Houston’s front office. He has posted a 2.23 ERA and a 25.2% strikeout rate over 68 2/3 innings, along with an impressive 3.5% barrel rate. However, he has struggled with walks, registering a 12.4% walk rate. Despite these issues, Scott has become one of the most utilized pitchers on the Astros roster this season.
His performance had been even better prior to his recent struggles, during which he has a 6.35 ERA over his last 5 2/3 innings. This downturn may be related to his injury, which has now ended his regular season. More information about Scott’s condition is expected later today when manager Joe Espada addresses the media. His ability to participate in the postseason may be in doubt.
For the 32-year-old Scott, making his playoff debut would be a significant achievement, especially as he has established himself during his fourth season in the majors. Prior to this year, he had a 9.00 ERA in 46 MLB innings spread across six teams from 2019 to 2023, with a stint in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball in 2020-21. Despite being 32, Scott won’t be eligible for salary arbitration until the 2025-26 offseason, and the Astros retain control of his rights through 2028.
