The Texas Tech Red Raiders experienced a tough 37-16 defeat against the Washington State Cougars on a night dedicated to honoring former coach Mike Leach. What was expected to be a close matchup quickly became one-sided, with the Red Raiders falling short and struggling throughout the game. This loss extends coach Joey McGuire’s road record to 3-9 since he took over at Texas Tech.
After the game, McGuire addressed several issues, expressing his frustration and acknowledging his role in the team’s performance.
“I don’t have a lot to say,” McGuire admitted. “I didn’t do a good enough job to win the game. There were penalties, we were 10 of 80 for penalties, one of five on fourth downs, and we had four turnovers. That’s on me, and I need to fix it. It’s very frustrating.”
McGuire struggled to find any positives from the game but noted some improvements and ongoing issues. “It’s kind of a double-edged sword,” he said. “We played better in the secondary, but we still allowed 212 rushing yards to their quarterback. We tried to be aggressive but ended up losing possession due to mistakes, like not fielding the kickoff properly. We had two turnovers on their side of the field and significant penalties while driving, similar to last week.”
Overall, McGuire reflected on the team’s self-destructive tendencies, emphasizing that the Red Raiders’ own errors and penalties are hindering their ability to compete effectively.
