According to Rick Dhaliwal’s initial report and supported by Daily Faceoff, Rangers are set to sign defenseman onto their camp roster for a professional tryout.
Rangers fans might remember him from his notable seasons with the Washington Capitals between 2017 and 2019. During his rookie year, he tallied 12 assists in 51 games, and after contributing six points in 33 games the following season, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for defenseman Nick Jensen.
With Detroit, Bowey added four points in 17 games to his season total, finishing with ten points. The next season, he had a career-best performance, scoring 3 goals and adding 14 assists for 17 points in 53 games—the most NHL games he’d played in a season. However, his progress was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and he has since struggled to secure a consistent spot in the NHL, appearing in only four games with the Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks.
Standing 6’1″ and weighing 207 lbs, Bowey, a former second-round draft pick (53rd overall), has posted solid numbers in the AHL. For the past three seasons, he has played in the KHL, moving between three different teams, with his time with the Red Wings being the last period of notable stability. The Rangers’ potential addition of Bowey to their camp roster adds an intriguing element, and while it would be quite a story for him to earn an NHL contract again, stranger things have certainly happened.
