All season long, speculation has surrounded the top superstar future with the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite being involved in trade discussions leading up to the deadline, the Jays were still hopeful of extending Guerrero Jr.’s contract during the offseason.
However, his performance since the deadline has made it even more challenging to secure a new deal. Guerrero Jr.’s impressive stats—currently a .327 batting average (2nd in MLB), 28 home runs, 93 RBIs, and a .960 OPS (7th in MLB)—have only increased his market value.
A good benchmark for the type of contract Guerrero Jr. might command is Rafael Devers’ 11-year, $331 million extension with the Boston Red Sox, signed last January. Both are key players for their teams, and with Guerrero Jr. turning 26 in March 2025, he’s comparable to Devers in age and impact. Guerrero Jr. has also demonstrated versatility by playing some third base recently.
Having failed to agree on a trade, the Blue Jays will need to offer a substantial contract to keep Guerrero Jr., who is a fan favorite and a vital part of the team. Not extending him would set a poor example for future players, especially when he’s having a season reminiscent of his 2021 performance, where he finished second for the AL MVP Award.
With high expectations for this season not being met, as the team is on track to finish with the worst record in the AL East, the offseason must focus on rebuilding. Securing Guerrero Jr. should be a top priority to maintain fan enthusiasm and excitement at Rogers Centre. With one year left on his current contract before hitting free agency in the 2025-26 offseason, re-signing him should be the Blue Jays’ primary objective once the season ends.
