The Philadelphia Phillies have placed outfielder on the 10-day injured list as of Thursday due to a kidney infection.
He has been sidelined since August 28. He was with the Phillies for their road series in Toronto but returned to Philadelphia for further evaluation.
“Obviously, I´m not a doctor but they´re telling me that it´s hard to tell how long it takes,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Thursday before the club opened a four-game series in Miami against the Marlins. “We thought that originally, 48 hours of antibiotics would have a chance to knock it out, but it just didn´t.”
Thomson mentioned that Hays hasn’t shown any progress with the initial medication treatment.
“We want to get to the bottom of the issue,” Thomson explained.
Hays, who is 29 years old, was brought to the team in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles on July 26, exchanging pitcher Seranthony Dominguez and outfielder Cristian Pache. In his 19 games with the Phillies so far, Hays has a batting average of .269, with one home run and five RBIs.
This is Hays’ second time on the injured list since joining the Phillies. He missed 13 games last month due to a strained hamstring.
The seven-year veteran was an American League All-Star last season.
To replace Hays on the roster, Philadelphia has recalled outfielder Cal Stevenson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. This move is retroactive to Tuesday.
As of Thursday, the Phillies, who lead the NL East, are seven games ahead of the Atlanta Braves.
