The competition to sign veteran forward , one of the top free agents available, is intensifying. The Detroit Red Wings have joined the Toronto Maple Leafs in the race to secure his services, with both teams seen as leading contenders.
Arthur Staple from The Athletic reported on August 29 that Detroit is now a “suitor” for Pacioretty and is “interested in adding” the former Canadiens star to their roster.
Detroit’s interest adds another layer to the competitive bidding for Pacioretty, who previously captained the Montreal Canadiens. However, the types of offers from each team differ. According to insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Leafs would likely present Pacioretty with a standard player contract (SPC) rather than a professional try-out (PTO) if an agreement is reached.
Conversely, the Red Wings might offer Pacioretty a PTO, which wouldn’t guarantee him a spot on the final roster for the 2024-25 season. He would need to earn a standard contract through his performance in training camp.
Pacioretty, who played for the Washington Capitals last season but was limited to 47 games due to injury, managed to score 4 goals and 23 points. He also registered one assist in four postseason appearances. At 35 years old, Pacioretty served as the Canadiens’ captain for a decade and could come at a low cost, having earned $2 million on a one-year deal last season.
