“This Is Home” Another Talent commit to Hokies

“This Is Home” takes on special meaning for Hokies local talent

The pipeline of student-athletes featured on *1st and 10* and moving on to Virginia Tech has seen significant growth since Brent Pry became head coach. This development may seem expected, but the rich football culture in southwest Virginia has played a crucial role in enhancing Virginia Tech’s roster.

From large schools like Salem High School to smaller programs such as Galax, if a player makes it onto *1st and 10*, they might attract the attention of Virginia Tech football.

“It’s huge, I think Coach Pry’s commitment to recruiting,” said Cole Pickett, a Galax High School graduate and current Hokies tight end. “Our footprint is significant for kids in Southwest Virginia. When you’re in high school, you strive to be featured on *1st and 10*, and if you can’t watch it live, you record it to watch later.”

Virginia Tech and Tennessee hold spring games today

Ja’Ricous Hairston, a former standout quarterback from Bassett High School and now a tight end at Virginia Tech, echoed this sentiment: “Whether you come from a school that consistently produces Division I talent or a smaller school with occasional standout players, if you have the skill, they will find you.”

This season, nine players from the coverage area are representing the Hokies, including defensive lineman Jorden McDonald, who played in all 13 games last year.

“When I was in high school, we didn’t get much recognition or recruitment, so seeing it now is really exciting,” McDonald noted. “I’m thrilled to see which players from my high school might come here and continue the tradition.”

A rising star from Radford, Virginia, has also caught Coach Brent Pry’s attention during fall camp. “The standout is PJ Prioleau,” said Pry. “He had a strong Spring game and has continued to impress throughout camp. He plays running back, wide receiver, and contributes on special teams. He’s earned everyone’s respect, and now it’s time to show what he can do on Saturdays.”

So, from Friday nights on *1st and 10* to Saturdays at Lane Stadium, there are plenty of local Hokies to cheer for.
