The 2024 season has not unfolded as hoped for the Chicago Cubs, and they are running out of chances to turn things around.
After missing a chance to improve their record against the struggling Miami Marlins on Sunday, the Cubs are now 5 1/2 games behind in the National League Wild Card race with only 31 games remaining. Their path to the postseason is challenging, but it’s not entirely out of reach.
Despite their slim playoff hopes, the Cubs can still make an impact through the waiver wire thanks to their big-market budget and high priority due to their win-loss record. Recently, a former division rival who could be a valuable asset was placed on waivers.
According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the Pittsburgh Pirates waived former Gold Glove outfielder Michael A. Taylor on Sunday. The Cubs are among several teams that might consider Taylor to enhance their outfield defense.
Taylor, who is 33, was placed on outright waivers, which means other teams have 48 hours to claim him and cover the remainder of his salary. If he goes unclaimed, the Pirates would need to either keep him on the roster or let him become a free agent while still paying his salary.
The remaining amount on Taylor’s $4 million contract is about $790,000, which should be manageable for the Cubs, especially after they released Hector Néris and his $9 million option for 2025.
Although Taylor’s bat is less effective now (with a 53 OPS+ this season), he remains an excellent defender. He won a Gold Glove in 2021 and is still considered one of the top defenders at center field, alongside Cubs rookie Pete Crow-Armstrong.
Adding Taylor as a late-game defensive asset could help the Cubs secure a few crucial wins. He is also a valuable pinch runner with impressive speed and can contribute against left-handed pitchers.
While this move might not propel the Cubs to World Series contention immediately, it could be worth the gamble. Sometimes, a veteran player can make a significant impact in a new environment.
