BREAKING: Giants acquire another super talent to bolster bullpen depth

The San Francisco Giants agreed to a minor league contract with  29-year-old. He had just been released by the Los Angeles Dodgers following first baseman Freddie Freeman’s return from the injured list.

He started 13 games at third base and eight at first base for the Dodgers, hitting .192/.306/.329 in 30 games with them. At 29 years old, he spent about two months in Los Angeles.

Overall this season, Biggio appeared in 74 games with both the Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays. He posted a .197/.316/.306 slash line and hit five home runs. He also had 70 strikeouts, marking a personal high with a 32 percent strikeout rate.

At the plate, Biggio is known for working deep counts and drawing a lot of walks, though this patience also results in a high strikeout rate. His approach is characterized by his disciplined batting.

The Dodgers acquired Biggio, along with cash considerations, from the Blue Jays in exchange for minor league right-hander Braydon Fisher on June 12.

Early in his MLB career, Biggio was the Blue Jays’ starting second baseman for a few seasons. Recently, the 29-year-old has played various infield positions, primarily at the corners, and also spent some time in right field with the Dodgers. Both Los Angeles and Toronto have designated him for assignment.

A product of Notre Dame, Biggio was selected by the Blue Jays as a fifth-round pick in 2019 and made his MLB debut that same year. He was expected to become a key player for Toronto alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, but he struggled to solidify his role with the team.

In his rookie season, Biggio hit 16 home runs for the Blue Jays, but he couldn’t surpass nine home runs in the following years. Despite these challenges, baseball runs in his family—his father is Hall of Famer Craig Biggio.

Biggio’s performance with the Dodgers was underwhelming, but he continues his career in the NL West with the Giants, where he will provide minor league depth. With Matt Chapman likely to become a free agent, there might be a chance for Biggio to compete for the third base position.
