The Miami Marlins have announced the recall of infielder Connor Norby from Triple-A Jacksonville, as reported on Monday. Isaac Azout of Fish on First first broke the news on Sunday night, and FanSided’s Robert Murray confirmed it on Monday morning.
Norby, 24, is currently ranked as the No. 3 prospect and the top position player in the Marlins’ farm system, according to MLB Pipeline.
The Marlins acquired Norby from the Baltimore Orioles on July 30 at the trade deadline. He was one of two prospects, along with outfielder Kyle Stowers, traded to Miami in exchange for starting pitcher Trevor Rogers. Stowers joined the Marlins immediately but has struggled, hitting just .096 with a .272 OPS and a -0.7 WAR in 16 games.
To accommodate Norby on the active roster, the Marlins have designated infielder Emmanuel Rivera for assignment. Additionally, they have called up right-handed pitcher Adam Oller from Jacksonville and sent right-handed pitcher George Soriano to Triple-A.
Norby made his MLB debut with the Orioles in June but appeared in only four games. He returned to the majors in July but played only five games before being traded and sent back to the minors.
In his nine MLB appearances, Norby has a .188 batting average with two home runs, one double, three RBIs, 12 strikeouts, no walks, a .594 OPS, and a 0.0 WAR. However, he performed well in 14 Spring Training games, hitting .276 with one home run, three doubles, three RBIs, one stolen base, and an .827 OPS.
Norby has primarily played as a second baseman but has also seen time in the corner outfield spots. He reached Triple-A in 2022 and has spent most of his time there, hitting .294 with 42 home runs, 159 RBIs, 23 stolen bases, and an .867 OPS across 241 games.
Since Vidal Bruján moved to the outfield on August 5, Otto Lopez has been the Marlins’ second baseman. Lopez is hitting .236 with a .585 OPS for the season but has a 1.0 WAR due to his strong defense and baserunning.
Rivera, who was sharing third base duties with Jake Burger, has a .214 average with one home run, 15 RBIs, a .563 OPS, and a -0.5 WAR through 96 games.
The Marlins have been somewhat shorthanded since the trade deadline, losing center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., left fielder Bryan De La Cruz, and first baseman Josh Bell. Former All-Star second baseman Tim Anderson was also designated for assignment earlier in July.
