The Nebraska football team faces another challenge following Saturday’s press conference, as they need to fill a new gap on the roster.
Sixth-year inside linebacker Javin Wright has been sidelined indefinitely due to a health issue, as announced by coach Matt Rhule during the press conference. Rhule mentioned, “He has a health condition that we’re addressing,” and added that he would withhold further details until Wright is ready to discuss it himself.
Wright, who was tied for second on the team with 51 tackles last season, has a history of blood clots and previously underwent surgery in 2021 to address the condition. Despite this setback, Wright remains with the team, though no timeline has been provided for his return.
With the departure of key linebackers Luke Reimer and Nick Henrich due to graduation, Nebraska’s linebacker corps has been thin. Returning starter John Bullock and Wright had stepped up in 2023, filling in when the senior linebackers were injured or ill. The team also benefits from the experience of Mikai Gboayor and transfer Stefon Thompson.
New additions to the linebacker group include Nebraska natives Gage Stenger and Vincent Genatone. Stenger, a Millard South alum, and Genatone, a North Platte native and Montana transfer, have been noted as potential contributors, with Genatone in particular being highlighted for his athleticism.
Nebraska is wrapping up fall camp and will soon turn their focus to their season opener against UTEP on August 31.
