Almost exactly one month after committing to NC State as part of a two-commitment day for the Wolfpack, Newberry High School (Fla.) defensive lineman flipped his commitment to Miami. The 6-foot-2, 255-pound three-star prospect visited the Hurricanes less than two weeks after committing to Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren and his staff, and left with an offer from Miami.
“The way I feel about Miami is amazing,” Newton, who now plans to enroll early at Miami in January, told 247Sports.
Yes, it’s safe to say that momentum wasn’t on the Wolfpack’s side on Friday.
News of Newton’s decommitment surfaced about eight hours after Mount Tabor High School (N.C.) four-star wide receiver Snook Peterkin defied the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions by committing to Virginia Tech over NC State and fellow in-state contender UNC.
The loss of Newton and the miss on Peterkin have dropped NC State’s 2025 football recruiting class to No. 54 in the country, according to 247Sports. It now ranks No. 14 among ACC schools, ahead of only Cal, Louisville, and Wake Forest.
This month, head coach Dave Doeren and his staff have secured only one 2025 commitment, from Kings High School (Ohio) three-star offensive guard Kage Payne, who was previously committed to Troy.
