Huge Boost: Michigan football reportedly landed a slew of transfers in the secondary and two are making a push to start

Michigan football focused on strengthening their secondary this spring by adding several new players. They brought in two cornerbacks and two safeties to enhance their defensive depth after spring practices.

UConn wide receiver Brett Buckman (10) is tackles by Tennessee defensive back Doneiko Slaughter (0), Tennessee defensive back Wesley Walker (13) and Tennessee linebacker Jeremiah Telander (22) during the Tennessee football game against UConn at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023.

As fall camp progresses into its third week, there is growing optimism about the improved depth in the secondary. Aamir Hall, a transfer cornerback from Albany, is competing with Jyaire Hill for the starting role opposite Will Johnson.

Hill has shown significant improvement since his freshman year and, as a former top-200 recruit, is a tough competitor. However, Hall is making a strong push for the position. According to Chris Hummer of 247 Sports, Hall is one of the key transfers to watch in Michigan’s secondary.

Another important transfer is safety Wesley Walker, who started at Tennessee last season before a brief stint with Louisville. He is contending with Quentin Johnson for the starting spot alongside safety Makari Paige.

While both transfers are likely to start in sub-package roles, Michigan’s defense frequently uses these sub-packages, often rotating four safeties and employing a similar strategy at cornerback and nickel positions.

Given these developments, Michigan football fans can be more confident in the team’s secondary depth for the upcoming season.
